3 reasons to be cautious of GMOs

It is important for you to know what GMOs are made of.

You probably have heard about GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) and the controversy around its consumption. There has been found highly negative side-effects of them in animals, we all know if an animal has side-effects, it is highly likely we will have them too.

In fact GMOs have been in the market for no more than 20 years, at our reach as part of the ingredients in many conventional products without us even being aware of it.

The main controversy about GMOs is that by modifying genes in any living organism, there is a great risk to modify also their immune system as well as altering the organisms health.

But instead of taking sides, what about we just share with you some risks and possible reasons to be cautious:

  • GMO toxins in fetal and maternal blood: a study made in Quebec, Canada, found multiple GMO toxins in maternal blood as well as in the fetus’s, even on non pregnant women. This may not seem very relevant, but at the same time, this is not how nature created us, more studies are required to prove possible damages, specially fetus related, because this agents may interfere with the fetus growth and natural development. I is thought that some of the consequences they may have are: infertility, endometriosis, miss carriage, premature birth, pre-eclampsia, gynecologic cancer, among others.
  • DNA in Genetically Modified crops may be transferred into humans who consume it: it is thought that the macromolecules we eat in food cannot be absorbed directly into our circulatory system. There has been found that thru an unknown mechanism, DNA fragments from Genetically Modified Food have infiltrated into our blood. This does not mean GMOs can infiltrate to our cells, but since they are linked to cancer, there is always the possibility until proven otherwise.
  • There are studies that link GMOs with disorders related to exposure to gluten: a study made at the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT) links disorders related to gluten, including Autoimmune and Celiac disease to 5 conditions that may trigger and aggravate them. This 5 conditions are:
  1. Leaky Gut Syndrome.
  2. Unbalanced Gut Flora.
  3. Activation of the Immune Response and Allergic Reaction.
  4. Dyspepsia.
  5. Damage to the Intestinal Wall

It is true that it isn’t 100% know how harmful GMOs can be, but in the meantime, in several countries of the European Union they have been banned. This is where we ask ourselves, wouldn’t it be important for other countries to ban them? Specially because there is so much doubt about it and it’s almost 100% provable how harmful they are for our health and for the planet. In the end, we can decide what we want to nourish our body and out family with.
